In accordance with its purposes, the Center for Mediterranean Urban Studies, holds various meetings. These are

Colloquia

The Center organizes the colloquium "Mersin in History" every three years. The first colloquium was held in 2002, the second was in 2005, and the third was in 2008. Sharing of new and original studies on Mersin and its region in an interdisciplinary perspective/approach is intended with this event. Especially the "memory and legacy" session, which is held on the last day of the colloquia, welcomes a large number of participants from the city.

Colloquia;

  • Function as a sharing "platform" for both the domestic and foreign researchers conducting studies on Mersin and its region,
  • To gather approaches and evaluations of experts from various disciplines on Mersin and its surrounding.
  • Prepare the ground for flourishing of new and original studies on Mersin and its' region; enabling sharing of local knowledge, culture and documents; sharing and keeping records of recent past and culture as told by local personalities and registering of oral history.

Proceedings of the past three colloquia are printed as university publication and can be obtained from university book sales office and accessed online http://kitap.mersin.edu.tr/

Mersin Friends of History Meetings

The field of local and urban history has already been a popular field in Mersin among local people and institutions that are curious about the recent history of the city. Identified the potentiality of the city, the Center began to organize “Mersin Friends of History Meetings” in March 2009 in order to encourage the ongoing efforts, to provide a platform to share the studies and to make these studies continue on a regular basis.

These meetings opened a path for a stronger university-city co-operation and until May 2010, a total of ten meetings took place with the partnership of İçel Art Society, which is one of the city's most important civil society institutions.

Meetings are open to public participation and take place at Nevit Kodallı Conference Hall of İçel Art Society in a pre-announced date once a month, on Mondays. A certificate of participation is presented to participants on behalf of the Center.

At the meetings, the volunteers to make presentations about their studies are chosen. They are supported by Center for Mediterranean Urban Studies, on request, on the issues of methods, research and presentation. The studies are mainly chosen about family histories, social history, neighborhood history, educational history, entertainment culture, urban development, highland life of Mersin and its surroundings. Until now, presentations made are as follows;

Thursday Meetings

On the basis of the mission of Center’s contribution to education, a series of open meetings, "Thursday Meetings", were launched in the spring term of 2007-2008 academic year for mainly students of faculty of architecture, and also for all university students, university staff and citizens. During the five meetings in the academic year, presentations of academicians from different disciplines like history, archeology, planning and architecture attracted great attention. The meetings organized together with Restoration and Conservation Center in Faculty of Architecture included presentations with enriched visual materials and with question-and-answer sections, and thus both students and instructors had an interactive sharing platform. A certificate of participation is presented to participants on behalf of The Center.
